I made this piece as part of Inktober from 2020.
I've been thinking about violence and those being complicit. The #blacklivesmatter and the #metoo movements have brought us face to face with many uncomfortable truths and systemic problems we face as a society. There are overpowering aggressors, people who pretend things don't exist by putting a happy mask on and distracting from it, those who go along with atrocities by hiding behind a mask or being silent and victims. Those not depicted in my drawing are the ones who speak up, that's where we, the viewers, come in. Change can happen one person and one conversation at a time. We all have a voice, and using that voice matters. We also have ears to listen and eyes to observe and those need to be brought to the table.
Inktober is an online social media-based event where artists from around the world commit to creating a drawing a day in ink during the month of October. There are many lists of official prompts you can use as guides. The prompt and day of the month is reflected above the title.
